/Every Monday we break down the top results in the marathon from over the weekend.
Good morning. It’s Medal Monday, November 6. We’re covering the New York City Marathon results, where a course record went down, along with a few other races across the country including the Charlotte Marathon and the Bass Pro Shops Marathon.
New York City Marathon
Perfect weather set the stage for a broken course record and a deep, but surprisingly slow, women's race. Tamirat Tola broke open the race early into the final 10K and took a commanding lead to win with a time of 2:04:58, a course record. The women's race, similar to past years, started off slow and continued that way well into the race before being strung out by Viola Cheptoo right before entering Central Park. Hellen Obiri, Letesenbet Gidey, and Sharon Lokedi were the final three to make a push for the win with Obiri pulling off a stunning sprint to the finish. Obiri crossed the line in 2:27:23, followed up 6 seconds later by Gidey. Lokedi quickly followed her in 2:27:33.
