Rolling course with scenic views. Don't underestimate the cold; stay fueled with Gatorade late.

Word on the course

Course Layout — The course features a rolling figure-8, starting and finishing at the Von Braun Center. You’ll wind through downtown Huntsville and past the Space and Rocket Center, which is a surreal highlight for many.

Aid Stations and Fuel — Runners recommend sticking to water early on, but many switched to Gatorade later in the race. A few reported that gels around mile 21 helped them push through the final stretch.

Race Day Logistics — The race is well-organized, with heat blankets and towels at the finish line. Arrive early to navigate the start area smoothly, as it can get crowded.

Weather Considerations — While reports mention pleasant temperatures, be prepared for potential cold. Several runners struggled with cold hands, especially in the early miles.

Scenic

Struggled with cold but enjoyed the scenic course through Huntsville

The race was well-prepared with heat blankets and a nice towel at the indoor finish line. I think this race is beautiful. I think this race is really well-routed to take you through some good sites of Huntsville. I think all of this because throughout the race, I was not fully able to enjoy and really had to focus on ensuring my body was warm enough to make it through this race.

Running past actual space rockets was a surreal highlight!

The big selling point of this race is that you get to run past ACTUAL SPACE ROCKETS!! THAT HAVE BEEN TO SPACE!! and you know what, it is incredible to run past SPACE ROCKETS midway through a marathon. These things are huge when you see them up close. It's unbelievable that we just threw a bunch of these enormous things up into space and then got them back somehow and now you can run past them in a marathon and your race-addled brain can just explode about that for a couple of miles.

Hilly

Struggled with high heart rate, but finished under 4:30

Race day weather was perfect: about 43F and cloudy at the start, rising to about 50F with some sunshine by 11:00am, and a 5-10mph wind out of the west. The race starts and finishes in downtown Huntsville, AL at the Von Braun Center. The course has 2 loops; the first loop takes runners through parts of the old historic downtown area, and the second loop takes runners to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and through the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

Finished strong despite rain and cold, achieved a 25-minute PR!

The race course is essentially a figure-8. You start at the VBC, then wander through downtown Huntsville for a while, then head north and east. When that loop comes back to the VBC, that's roughly halfway. The west loop goes through west Huntsville, out to the Space and Rocket Center and the Huntsville Botanical Garden, then back into downtown.

Struggled with cold hands but finished under 4 hours

I know I could finish in under 4 hours, but my quads were starting to feel tight, almost on the verge of cramping, so I would have to be careful. I had stuck to sips of water at the aid stations, but decided to take Gatorade at the few remaining stations on course. Had my last gel at mile 21, but I almost couldn't get it open because my hands were so cold. I also brought headphones to the race, but only turned on my music around mile 21 to give me something to zone in on, and this helped a lot.
