At roughly 200 meters below sea level, it is among the lowest-elevation marathon courses in the world. First run in 1977, it serves as the Israeli national marathon championship and is typically held in early January. The men's course record is 2:07:30, set by France's Patrick Tambwe in 2012; the women's course record is 2:25:45, set by Ethiopia's Hiwot Gebrekidan in 2017.
