Eliud Kipchoge Returning to Berlin in 2023

The reigning champion and world record holder in the marathon will be returning to Berlin on September 24, 2023 where he shaved 30 seconds off his own record in 2022. Amos Kipruto, who won last year’s London Marathon, has also announced for Berlin this year and is expected to be the top competitor to Kipchoge at the major.

Eliud Kipchoge, widely regarded as one of the greatest long-distance runners of all time, has become a legendary figure in the world of marathon running. The 38 year old, formerly a track start, winning Kenya a silver medal in the 2003 World Championships in the 5000 meters event, moved to the marathon and has proven to be most formidable at the distance. Of the 18 marathons he has run, he has won 15 of them.

Notably, the first time Kipchoge ran the Boston marathon was in 2023. Hype surrounding the event was high, with fans debating whether or not the Kenyan could pull out his effortless performance on the hilly course through Massachusetts. Having won 4 of the 6 world majors, (London, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin) Boston would have brought him one step closer to being the first runner to win every marathon major. Unable to pull off the win on a rainy race day, he came in an unlikely 6th place. He has never run the New York City marathon.

With his return to the Berlin Marathon in 2023, Kipchoge has a lot to prove. He knows this course, having won the race multiple times, and there will be the expectation that he can bounce back from his Boston disappointment. And as always, there will be speculation on whether or not he can lower the world record yet again, maybe even to the point of running a sub two hour marathon in a qualified race.
