Reviews & Race Reports
Course Layout — The course is flat and fast, making it ideal for personal bests. However, the first few kilometers can be crowded, especially on the Erasmus Bridge, which may frustrate your pacing.
Crowd Support — Crowd energy is a standout feature. Many runners reported feeling uplifted by the cheers, particularly in the city center where the atmosphere resembles a festival. Expect emotional boosts from family and friends at key points.
Aid Stations — Aid stations are every 5k, featuring a unique sponge system for hydration. Runners noted that this method helps prevent spills but may take some getting used to.
Weather Considerations — While the weather is generally good, it can feel warmer than expected later in the race. Be prepared for the heat, especially if you’re not acclimated, as several runners struggled in the latter stages despite starting conditions appearing mild.
Crowded start led to frustrating pacing struggles
First few kms were insanely crowded on the bridge and beyond as I swerved past people to be able to pick up some pace. Incredibly frustrated, I managed to average a decent pace though. After around 10k, the course entered a narrow bike path that seemed to be designed to torture me in Marathon hell. There was no way to pass ANY of the other runners and I had to accept pace of 5:20/km.
Fought through tight hamstrings to finish strong despite struggles.
Weather conditions on the day were good, thankfully dropping from 22C on Saturday to around 13C on Sunday with light winds (though later in the race it felt much warmer than 13C!) The first 10km passed quickly with great vibes from the big crowds and lots of music pushing me along, I was still feeling strong when 20km passed and I'd continued to maintain my pace - and more importantly didn't have any complaints with the ankle.
Fought through leg pain and hunger to finish strong
The weather was good for running. It felt a bit cold, but with temperatures between 8-15 degrees celcius during the race it can't get much better. I didn't feel much wind, probably also because of the large crowds an many runners surrounding me. Standing in the coral though feels a bit chilly. The spectators were also complaining about the cold air, but hey, today is about the runners.
Executed pacing strategy perfectly, finished strong with negative split.
After the final turn I saw the finish and tried to go as hard as I could while still enjoying the moment. It's hard to describe the rush of emotions I was feeling in the final 500m but I felt amazing. I threw my hands up and crossed the line in a time of 3:13:03, which was way faster than I expected.
Crowd energy felt like the Tour De France at the finish
Now circling back into the city center my father and my gf were cheering me on and later entering the last bits the crowds got absolutely bonkers. Felt like I was in the Tour De France with people on the road leaving uncomfortably small amounts of space and cheering like they were mad! If I had been running okay still I would have flown!!
